Days Until 2020

It’s coming…

A few years ago, we wrote an article about how Microsoft will end its support of legacy Windows products and operating systems in 2020. Since then, we’ve been busy helping companies upgrade their existing mobile technology. Just recently, we formed a strategic partnership with OnTrac to help them implement new Android technology to improve their mobility and package tracking across the country.

Now, as we’re less than 12-months away until 2020, the countdown is on.

The fact is, beginning in January, Microsoft will phase out their mobile operating systems. This means no support, no updates, and most frightening for businesses, no security patches.

What’s more, many of the older 2G and 3G networks used by these devices will be shut down to make way for additional LTE and soon-to-be 5G data networks. So, what does this all really mean? Well, if you currently use a Windows mobile device to manage your business, those devices will soon turn into a giant paperweight.

Technology continues to evolve at a rapid pace, and it seems like every few weeks there’s a new software update or new feature available. Better technology means better devices and faster response time. And, the fact is, Android continues to come out on top. Check out the infographic to see what will happen to Windows devices vs. Android devices beginning in January 2020.

What this means for you

As a professional in the supply chain process, we highly recommend that you conduct a full assessment of your handheld, mobile computers, and tablets. If necessary, work with the appropriate IT team to help understand the type of technology in use. If you own Windows devices, consider this your warning.

Here are a few facts that will become a reality in less than 12-months:

No Windows security updates, increasing the chance for a data breach or security issue.
No technical support. Software bugs, cracked screens, and batteries won’t be replaced.
Unfriendly user-experience; sluggish equipment due to lack of updates.
Dropped calls, spotty coverage, or no access to data as older 2G/3G networks retire.

But, I have until 2020, right?

Fact: Technically, yes. You have until 2020. But, 2020 is right around the corner.

Here’s an alarming statistic. Each year in the U.S., $1.8 trillion of productivity is wasted because of outdated technology.

Fact: You don’t have to do this alone.

That’s a statement we stand behind 100%. Migrating to new technology is no easy task, and you should never have to do it alone.
